Up in the Attic

If I recall, this came about because I was practicing the picking pattern in House of the Rising Sun and got bored of playing the same thing over and over. I started playing E, B, E7, A, Am, E, F# and a whole new song developed.
The tempo and meter changes are typical of my writing style. Sometimes I hear a melody in my head that matches the mood of the song, but not necessarily the tempo or time signature. So what? If it sounds good to my ears, I go with it… unless I’m writing for a full funk/rock/pop band, in which case it really ticks off the people trying to dance. The looks on their faces as they try to cope with 4/4 -> 13/8 -> 11/8 -> 12/8 (transposed triplets) is almost worth it.
Up in the Attic is one of those songs that I can close my eyes to and drift off to anohter place. Thank you for all of the reveries… It is even fun to try to dance to sometimes. I’m glad it entertains you so.
I recall a languorous afternoon by the sea.. unshaven red-necks were throwing lines into the murky brown water trying to catch pint-sized hard-head catfish, drinking twelve-packs of pabst blue ribbon and generic beer that said “beer”
There was nothing peaceful about the scene as violence is common among such men and could occur for the meanest of offenses.. an eyelash in the eye that might make one wink or a clumsy footing on the granite rocks of the jetty that might send one’s bait bucket to rolling is all it might take to inspire these monkeys to fisticuffs..
Up in the Attic has the melody that.. with God’s hand.. could make these poor souls calm and friendly.. maybe even eager to not spit tobaccky-leaf juice so close to one’s feet..
Great tune, man..
